Musical Tidbits

In the wee hours in the morning before the sun rises, as my music is playing through iTunes and my speakers, I've come to realize how much my musical tastes have changed over the years. It became even more apparent as I was at the Karaoke Bar, realizing that the songs I picked no one knew the lyrics to. However, for the most part the more "older" songs I picked, the more people knew the lyrics and joined along. Believe me, after having to sing "Float On" by Modest Mouse alone you sort of get the idea of where to turn next.

As you're young you listen to what everyone else is listening to. As you grow older, you being to develop your own taste and start deciding whats funky and whats sucky. The stuff that you used to jam to during your middle school dances become retarded, and you realize that there's shit that's not on the radio that is awesome, and shit that's on the radio blows chunks.

I'm listening to the new Death Cab album right now, "Narrow Stairs", and basically if you saw me 6 years ago you would dumbfounded to see how drastic of a musical choice in music I was listening to. I had my rap phase, and right around 7th-8th grade was my angry-music time. Slipknot, Powerman 5000, Disturbed, the lot. Fuck sakes, I was listening to stuff that would just be loud. But thats over and done with, and I've regained my sanity and started listening to normal-er music.

Basically these are the dudes this past 12 months that have rocked my playlists and really got the groove going. My friend told me that this shirt totally suits me, but I really don't think so. I'm not those elitest underground cockbags, I just like stuff thats different, and if its nice regardless of being mainstream whatevs, the more listeners the better ups for these guys.

Silversun Pickups:

These guys totally rock. The first song I heard from them was "Well Thought out Twinkles" and I've been grooving to them since. These guys are the new Smashing Pumpkins, and if you had to have one song on your playlist from them, it has to be "Lazy Eye".

Mute Math:

Listened to these guys in concert last October. Probably one of the best performances I have ever seen. These guys bring so much energy to the stage its hard not to want to jump into a crowd of people and start a mosh pit. They can somehow mix so many kinds of music together it's amazing sometimes the music they amalgamate together. From electronic, to guitar, to reggae, to insane drum solos, the lead singer's voice molds to every direction they take w/ their songs.

Ippazzi:
These guys I picked up in local New York. They're recent grads of NYU. Something different about them is they got a dude who can rock the guitar paired up w/ a poetic rapper. Weird, but somehow it works. Listen to their stuff here. Gotta listen to "Funk Jam", "After a While", "Go Away"

The Tellers:
These guys are fun. They are just fun to listen to. They're from Belgium and I picked them up on the soundtrack to FIFA08. Just two dudes just having a good time and buggering around.

Of course, if you want something more well known check out these albums, worth your time:

Jason Mraz "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things"
Augustana "Can't Love, Can't Hurt"
Coldplay "Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends"
The Shins "Wincing the Night Away"
Spoon "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga"

Cheers
